The Uncon is getting close!

Things to do:

  • Order your T-shirts and tote bags (we will have a selection of bags to buy on the day). Visit the Shop on the website:
  • Send your TBR photo (and a sentence or two of bio) to Heaven-ali
  • Make sure your wishlists are up to date, particularly for those participating in the NSS

Weekend ticket

The price for the weekend is now £30 – still a great bargain! Don’t forget that partners and friends are very welcome, too, so please sign them up.

Saturday lunch

If you have not yet ordered a buffet lunch for the Saturday, it is not too late. You can order and pay on arrival. The kitchen can cope as long as we give final numbers by 10.30 am on Saturday. All diets catered for.

Saturday evening meals

Details of the 4 restaurants we have chosen are on the website, under the ‘Events’ drop-down menu. Sign-up will be on the Saturday, before 12 noon, to give everyone the best chance of their preferred cuisine, so decide on your order of preference now.

Crossing zone

If you’re starting to label up books for release at the Uncon, a crossing zone has been created for your use. It is ‘UK Unconvention 2016 – Birmingham’.

We also have some unique Uncon labels, brilliantly designed by shnedwards. A page of these labels is appended to this newsletter, and they appear on the website. If you use sticky labels, they are designed for use with Avery L7163.

TBR competition? Bookrays?

If you haven’t already sent your TBR photo to Heaven-ali, now is the time to do it. Half a dozen books from your TBR, which represent your reading tastes, with a couple of sentences about you. We shall have fun on the Friday night guessing whose is which!

Details of the bookrays are in the Events drop-down menu on the website. Send a PM to Heaven-ali NOW to let her know which one(s) you would like to read. There is still time to get one read (depending on how fast a reader you are!).

We have a goodly number of themed prizes, and the system for drawing the raffle will be the same as for the past few years. You will be given both tickets with the same number rather than just one ticket as happens with a traditional raffle. You keep one ticket, and put the other in the small box beside the prize that you would like to win. Do the same with the other tickets that you have bought; they can be placed all in the same box or distributed between several. We shall then make the draw from the small boxes of tickets. This way, if you win, you will be assured of getting something that you really want. Clear? It will be!

Sunday activities

We now have several Sunday morning activities organised. Details are on the website, again under the ‘Events’ drop-down menu. You will have the chance to sign up for your preference on the Saturday of the Uncon.

Strathallan parking

You will find details about this in the ‘Venue’ drop-down menu, which confirms that parking at the Strathallan is still FREE for delegates, visitors and guests, i.e. YOU. Please don’t be confused by all the signs, payment machines, etc; we DO NOT have to pay for parking.

I’m sure you have ‘got’ this by now, but…

…the Conservative party conference happens in the city shortly after the Uncon; security will be tight and we wouldn’t recommend wild releasing outside. Many of the independent coffee shops have bookshelves, and the website has details of our OBCZs. Although not (yet) an OBCZ, the Edwardian Tea Rooms in the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery has bookshelves around the walls. The Sunday walks will provide releasing opportunities, as all of them are at least partly outside the centre.

We cannot believe that we are less than a month away from the Uncon. We can’t wait to welcome you to Birmingham!
