Introducing Guest Author Simon Michael

simonmichael-0002We are delighted to be welcoming Simon Michael to the Unconvention weekend.

Simon, a barrister for over 30 years, prosecuted and defended enough murderers, armed robbers, con artists and assorted villainy to provide a lifetime of true crime stories.  He was published here and abroad in the 1990s and his short story Split was shortlisted for Cosmopolitan/Perrier’s Short Story Award. Four children, two divorces and much therapy forced him to spend the next 20 years practising law, but in 2016 he finally retired to write full-time.

The Brief and An Honest Man (Urbane Publications) are the first two books in a new series of crime thrillers featuring the morally compromised anti-hero barrister, Charles Holborne, an ex-boxer born on the wrong side of the tracks in the East End.  The books are set in the streets, courts and prisons of 1960s London, often considered a “Wild West” period in British criminal justice, when lawyers had to negotiate a difficult and dangerous path between the corrupt police and the gangs, such as the Krays and the Richardsons, each vying for control of Britain’s big cities.

In addition to providing exciting crime thrillers, Simon deals with themes of morality, alienation and displacement.   RC Bridgestock, Waterstones No 1 Bestsellers and script consultants to the BBC’s Happy Valley and ITV’s Scott & Bailey said of An Honest ManAn Honest Man drops you into the murky depths of gangland London when the Krays and Richardsons were in their prime.  The criminal trial at the Old Bailey is gripping and utterly compelling… clever, authentic twists and turns… Brilliant!  A must read.”
